A month and over 600 responses into the My Pizza Personality project and my disillusionment with Twitter has solidified like congealed cheese. After weeks of selling any self-respect in 140 characters or less, I now have a bad taste in my mouth. However, that won’t stop me from going back for seconds with the thought that the next bite might be different.

My kid traded her bike for pavement last week in her participation of one of life’s more popular character-building exercises. As I conveyed the particulars of the gaping bone-revealing wound to my friends and colleagues, they responded in-kind with their own superman-flights off rooftops and stumbles down stairs. Their responses made me aware of the interesting social norm of self-disclosure reciprocity.

If you have dealt with anyone you have considered a “client” or “customer”, you join millions who have followed a fairly typical five-step approach. You 1) define objectives, 2) work out how (or if) you can meet those objectives, 3) apply effort towards meeting those objectives, 4) deliver against those objectives, and 5) look back to see how you did. As we continue our studio journey through Covey’s 7 Habits with “Habit 2: keeping the end in mind”, we ask ourselves what it would look like to do step 5 on both ends.
